Say NO to Healthcare Cuts!

Save our NHS Leicestershire emerged in 2018 out of the combined forces of the Campaign Against NHS Privatisation, which had been established to fight the 2011 Health and Care Bill, and the campaign to save the Children’s Heart Unit at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester – the East Midlands Children’s Heart Centre.

The then Department of Health was trying to close down the Children’s Heart Centre in order to concentrate children’s heart surgery into fewer units across England. However, the quality of care and outcomes for children at the Glenfield Unit were excellent and public support for the unit was strong. As a result of ‘people power’, organised and led by the Save the Children’s Heart Centre campaign, we won the day and the unit was saved!

Save our NHS Leicestershire campaigns for a health services which is:

• Publicly funded
• NHS provided and
• Democratically accountable.

We believe in the founding principes of the NHS, that the service should be:

• Available to all who need it
• Paid for by all through taxation
• Equally good wherever it is used
• Organised on a planned and collaborative basis
• Able to offer timely and good quality services from cradle to grave – to cover our physical and mental health needs through prevention, public health, primary care, urgent and emergency care, planned care, specialist care and palliative care.

We campaign for an end to privatisation, for a strong service which is big enough to care for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and for as much transparency and accountability in health decision making as possible. We have a particular focus on the planned reorganisation of hospital services with a concern to ensure that future facilities are big enough and robust enough to serve patients for many decades.
